Let the Games Begin
Let the Games Begin
By Janet Selleck, Orion Systems Group
It was a great day in September, when I started my employment at Orion Systems Group. I remember my first day of work and how everyone treated me like they have known me for years. I thought to myself, FINALLY a place to call home – a place where people are normal and a place that seems to be stable. This, of course, is a comparison to a number of jobs I had previously worked. Then the day of great awakening and sheer terror arrived!
I came to the office one morning ready to take on the world and saw my fellow employees sitting around in a circle, looking shell-shocked, and this GUY standing in the middle, shaking hands with everyone saying, “Welcome To Heaven!” Well, anyone that doesn’t know Bruce can imagine what went through my mind at that point. This place didn’t look anything like HEAVEN and this guy couldn’t be GOD! I remember thinking to myself; even George Burns portrayed him better than this! Little did I realize that the saying “LET THE GAMES BEGIN” would literally become a part of my life.
Over the course of the next year and a half, Bruce has introduced Orion to many “STUPID GAMES”. The Trolley, Channels, Planks, Spider Web, Plates, Acid River, and Orion’s biggest success, the Egg Drop, all have many stories behind them. These games have frustrated us at times, caused us to dislike Bruce and think terrible thoughts, brought us together as a true family, and most of all, taught us to work together as a team. It is amazing how many times you can say to yourself, “No Way, I am never gonna do that” and then something comes over you. It is a sense of competition raging through your veins, not to mention the challenge and rewarding experience that keeps us going back for more.
All these lessons learned from these STUPID GAMES have caused us to think “out of the box” in order to be successful at them. There were times (many I might add) that we were not successful at the first attempt, and that HURTS beyond giving birth to a 10 pound baby. Bruce keeps reminding us that “Hey – it’s just a stupid game”! But, if you can’t be successful in a STUPID GAME, then how can you be successful in business? How can we deliver “Raving Fan” service to our customers and how do we live with ourselves? I’m sure that many of you can relate this to your own experiences.
We look forward to the day when every STUPID GAME Bruce throws our way can be completed without a hitch, look at him straight in the eye, shake his hand and say, “Hey Bruce – Welcome to Heaven”! I’m sure he does too!
